‘The Grifter’ by Sean Campbell & Ali Gunn is a standalone crime thriller by new authors to me. The cover and the synopsis enticed me in and I am glad they did! What a superb book.
The synopsis is so good I am sharing it in full with you.

One will rise. The other will fall.
Kent Bancroft’s rise to fame and fortune was nothing short of meteoric. Once a simple teacher in London’s East End, he’s now on course to become Britain’s youngest billionaire.
But his success has come on the back of those he’s trodden upon to get there. Among them is a man whose fall was as swift as Kent’s rise. He used to be a sparky, honest and hard-working. Now, he’s homeless, drunk, and down one leg.
And he blames Kent for everything.
Forget forgiveness. Forget turning the other cheek. And forget waiting for karma.
This is a victim who won’t stand idly by.
He wants revenge.
And he’s going to get it.
Kent Bancroft will never see him coming.
Well, with that I started this book and I was so interested in this story I read it in two lots. Such an excellent thriller to read. Two men, two tales. Kent Bancroft, a rich man who made himself rich with the blood and sweat of others. A man who I am sure could have a God complex and feels he is above everyone else. Then there is the man who lost everything due to Mr Kent Bancroft. Absolutely everything. What Kent doesn’t know is the ‘little man’ is determined to get revenge and with everything Kent did to get where he is, I really can’t say I blame him. I felt for him.
Sean Campbell and Ali Gunn have created two characters that put my emotions through the wringer in this book. Kent Bancroft is someone everyone loves to hate and boy, did I! Our ‘avenging angel’ the little man took me right back to my childhood, when my parents had a really bad time. All my memories rose back up to the surface. We couldn’t afford to pay for the electricity, we moved out of our family home just before it was repossessed. I could really empathise with him. Although his revenge is not one I could take…

An intriguing story that keeps you turning to pages just because you need to know if your guesses are correct, or not. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves an intelligent thriller, it is a great read.
