Thank you to ZooLoo’s Book Tours and Leopold Borstinski for allowing me to be on this blog tour and for my copy of the book to write this review today.
‘Casino Chiseller’ by Leopold Borstinski is the fourth instalment in the Alex Cohen series and the first book in the triple box set for three episodes of Alex Cohens life. A gangster saga that follows the Jewish mobster Alex Cohen through the years. This series just gets better with every book I pick up.
This book sees Alex having been released from prison and feeling like he has been left high and dry by the syndicate. He decides that although the syndicate has cut ties, he still has friends that need his type of talent.
Alex goes to Las Vegas to his friend there, Benny. He is soon back in the game coercing people to pay up their insurance money, with his particular brand of persuasion. Extortion rackets have been around for years all that changes are the people at the head of the game. We get a glimpse of how the mob was involved in the growth of these gambling places in Las Vegas and we also see some well-known mobsters pass through as well as stars of the stage and screen.
We also see some emotional and heartbreaking moments for those of us that have been here for the ride, which are written perfectly. Alex’s personal life, as always gets in the way and friendships are put to the test as Alex decides if he really wants to get back in with the mob bosses. These decisions are paramount to his cause.
As always this gangster Noir saga had me in the palm of its hand. I thoroughly enjoyed the setting of Las Vegas it made a change and we saw a bit more of Alex himself. The real man and his character, it created even more depth to an already fantastic story with excellently created characters. As always it was a fast-paced story that sped through ten years of Alex’s life but felt like a drop in the ocean. An engrossing and compelling book with the right amount of violence that is expected from mobsters and I loved it, again! A story of historical fiction artfully weaved together by one heck of an author.
