Who do you trust when everyone is lying?
My name is Tess Parker.
Two days ago, I was in a car accident with my sister-in-law, Torrie. Before she slipped into a coma, she asked my husband and me to care for her four-month-old son, Levi.
Yesterday, a woman claiming to be Torrie’s estranged sister knocked on our door. But Torrie has no siblings . . . or so she said. She and my brother were only together a short time before he left, and Torrie has clearly been keeping secrets.
Today, another of Torrie’s “sisters” has come to town. Both say the other is lying about who they are.
Neither of them is telling the truth.
Both of them want Levi.
I was lucky to be a part of the first books journey and hoped that Erik Therme’s second book would be just as good as that. I don’t know why I even considered it wouldn’t be. If She Wakes is as tense and thrilling a read as If She Dies.
Although it is a second book, it is possible to read as a standalone. The author does fill in the background a little along the way, so the reader can get the background.
As someone who had everything in place for this book, I was eager to catch up with Tess and Josh. This book picks up after Tess’s brother had passed away from cancer, and they now have his wife and son to help through life. After a car accident in which Tess was driving, Torrie is left in a coma, leaving Tess and Josh to care for Eli.
As Tess struggles to overcome her inner turmoil from previous events, Torrie’s sisters arrive in town. Are they here for Eli?
Well, I was already on tenterhooks from the start. It was almost like I read the previous book yesterday. The tension is still taut, and Tess and Josh’s marriage feels almost like tissue papered together. Erik Therme has again created characters that are indelibly human. Well developed and realistic. I was torn apart for Tess again in this book.
Tess’s terror pours of the pages as she attempts to get to the bottom of everything. She is keeping secrets from Josh even though she promised him they would have a fresh start. I did wonder why she has to do these things and why Josh never engages with her properly. It always feels like he is trying to appease a child.
I read this over one day; the suspense is so high that I just had to read one more chapter, every chapter! Just as I thought I may have an inkling, the story took a turn; I would never have guessed! This was like a cherry on the top of a story already full of suspense and, at times, unreliable characters.
Another excellent book in the Harlow series. I am eagerly waiting for a number 3 now. I do hope there is one. Another twisty story from Erik Therme that I recommend wholeheartedly.
