I am thoroughly excited to bring you my review of Birth Of The Storm by Valerie Storm on behalf of Escapist Tours today. Thanks to both escapist Tours and Valerie Storm for the copy of the book.
A bolt of lightning. And a dream of vengeance.
For wolf-demon Kari, these define her every waking moment. Her parents are dead, slaughtered by human hands, forcing their only daughter to masquerade among their killers to save her own skin. Now she walks among them, hiding her lightning-based abilities and plotting a terrible revenge, believing her schemes are all she’s good for now. But when she discovers unexpected solace among a group of humans who look past her monstrous nature, Kari finds herself questioning everything. Her mission. Her dreams. Even the hatred festering in her heart.
Is it possible for a creature like Kari to find happiness in a world that despises her?
Or will the specters of her past force her down the path of vengeance in the end?
Birth of the Storm by Valerie Storm is a brand new fantasy series for Young Adults. I found it to be a book that can easily be enjoyed by older readers too. Valerie Storm is an author I haven’t come across before. I saw this title, cover and blurb and I needed to read it immediately.
I love a good fantasy story, there is nothing better than opening a book up and being swept into a world that is truly unique. Birth of the Storm is just that. A truly unique plot, world and even characters.
One thing I will say is, do not expect to like most of the characters. Valerie Storm has skilfully created the most evil ones I have come across in the first book of a series.
The story of Kari, a wolf demon, born with powers she didn’t expect, or want. Valerie explores the darker side, but saying that it isn’t just the darkness. There is hope and light as the story unfolds, just don’t expect too.much of it!
This is a great start to the series, Valerie’s world building puts the reader right there. The magic system is original and her vivid detailed settings just finishes it off. Her characters really make you feel for them. I connected with Kari and at times my heart went out to her. Valerie has definitely created Kari perfectly. I was with her throughout.
As I said this is not a sweet, light book but a layered story with a darkness you don’t usually see. Characters that are detailed, hateful and others in which you see goodness and hope.
A book I read so fast and a story I didn’t want to leave. One I won’t forget in a hurry. The second book is going to be interesting and I hope to read it soon.
Valerie Storm was raised in Tucson, Arizona. Growing up, she fell in love with everything fantasy. When she wasn’t playing video games, she was writing. By age ten, she began to write her own stories as a way to escape reality. When these stories became a full-length series, she considered the path to sharing with other children & children-at/heart looking for a place to call home.
