Mark Brownlees – The Shadow Man

‘The Shadow Man’ by Mark Brownlees is a psychological horror story that had me gripped from beginning to end. Mark Brownlees is a new author for me and the best part of being a book blogger is discovering new writers like him.

Mark Brownlees

A group of friends, Philippa, Sally, Katie and Clara all experienced horrific events 30 years previously. They have all blocked these memories out as happens with self-preservation. The official name is ‘selective amnesia’, 30 years on the dreams begin. They all return to their village and meet up with Jamey, the one who never left. After they arrive back the memories begin to surface and they all start to remember the horrific events of that summer.

A story told over a dual timeline. We have the present day and then the other one is from the 1980s and it reveals what happened back then and shows us why the friends are all estranged. This duality works well, it interlinks both timelines smoothly. Mark Brownlees certainly knows how to grab a readers attention and keep it until the last page. The twists in the story are placed just in the right places to keep the reader on their toes.

A very sinister and suspenseful read that ticks every box for a horror reader. I enjoyed being kept on the edge of my seat all the way!

Thanks to ZooLoo’s Book Tours and Spellbound Books for the copy of the book.
