L.B. Stimson – The Farmhouse At Peace And Plenty

‘The Farmhouse at Peace and Plenty’ by L.B. Stimson is an atmospheric, gothic, mystery story. This book may only be around 125 pages but the author uses every single one of them to its full potential.

The house, for all of its solitude, seemed incredibly noisy
The Farmhouse, having stood against time and history for nearly 160 years in the Virginia countryside, was forgotten and abandoned until Kyle and Jenny Dowling moved in during the summer of 1972.

The Dowlings, married just a year, were struggling to repair their broken marriage. It was to be the perfect place, away from it all, to heal their relationship. Jenny would write and Kyle would tend to minor renovations. The rent was cheap.
The realtor warned them, however, against staying beyond the final days of fall.

An atmospheric and intriguing tale that doesn’t waste any time in getting started. Even as Jenny and Kyle first view the house there is something that doesn’t sit right. The Farmhouse signifies a fresh start for them both. They hope to rebuild their marriage as Kyle rebuilds the Farmhouse back to a state that means they can sell it on.

Jenny begins to see movements at the edge of her vision, shadows and all other weird unexplained things. As the story unfolds it seems as if the house itself is trying to say something. This gave me a few goosebumps as it went on and it was only Jenny picking up on these things. The atmosphere builds quite nicely as the author concentrates on the eerie happenings.

I thought the house itself felt like the main character, the rural setting in its isolated spot along with it being run down and the inside being old too. It added to the suspense and mystery of what it was almost trying to say.

A story that builds the atmosphere really well and adds to it really well. The general creep out factor for me was pretty high as I could imagine being out in the sticks in an old house and being terrified of the noises and everything Jenny was dealing with. Not a place for me.

A great book for October that’s for sure.
