Chase

“A tiger pack is camping out at Greenwater. They have eighty-nine members, who seek protection from the Master Vampire with the affinity for tigers. They’re on the run from something, and they have women and children among them.”

Avi blinked and stared at me with his mouth agape. Thurman stood there with a hand resting at each hip, both eyebrows arched. I knew I’d fucked up. I should have told them right from the start and would have, if not for Carley. Yet again, I’d been caught thinking with the wrong part of my anatomy. The worst part was, until today, I hadn’t even realized it myself.

“How long have you been sitting on this?” Thurman asked.

“Five days,” I mumbled.

“You didn’t think to mention it sooner?” Avi’s quiet discernment was worse than a full blown argument. It always made me feel like crap, which didn’t help when I’d earned it.

“I was trying to learn as much as I could. At first, I didn’t know if they were passing through or planned to stick around.”

Thurman considered my response. “So, you’ve talked to them then?”

I focused on the tattoo of the Virgin Mary on Thurman’s right bicep. A symbol of the innocence taken from us and forgiveness we sought for those we’d killed the night of the massacre. It also paid respect to the physical mother he’d lost, whom he’d been very close to.

I thought about all we’d been through, what we’d sacrificed. I couldn’t lie to them, nor did I want to. Whatever stupid game I’d been playing with Carley, it was part of this; they needed to know.

“Well, technically I’ve only talked to one person, and all my Intel came from them.”

“It’s a girl, isn’t it?” Nathan piped up from the table.

Of all the times for him to actually participate in conversation… I couldn’t deny it, but also couldn’t seem to find any words to explain myself.

“For fuck’s sake Chase!” Avi groaned and dragged both hands through his blonde hair.

“Just because he talked to a girl, doesn’t mean he slept with her,” said Thurman.

Avi gave Thurman an unimpressed look. “Just because it’s been years, doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten what he’s like, either.”

“I’d say he’s definitely kissed her.” This was the most engaged in group conversation I’d seen Nathan in forever, but shit, did it have to be over this?

“Actually, she kissed me.” My instant defensive response certainly didn’t win me any favors.

“Jesus… that’s even worse. Ugh.” Avi’s level of pissed-off bothered me. I’d kept my nose clean and stayed out of trouble for all these years. Now, one kiss, from one female, and they’d started treating me like a teenage delinquent.

“I said I’d talk to the ‘Master’ and see if we could negotiate some sort of alliance for them. It could be a good thing, they could be the miracle we’ve been praying for.”

Avi shook his head “I suppose our livelihood was the first thing you thought of when you met…”

“It was!” I shouted. “I didn’t mean to confront her the first time, but once it had happened, I decided to use it to our advantage. I’m confident we can work out a mutually beneficial alliance.”

Thurman’s brow furrowed. “How do you accidentally confront someone?”

“Probably the same way he accidentally gave Ms. Thomas a strip show,” said Nathan.

“Yes!” I shouted again. “That’s exactly what happened!”

“You gave a stranger a strip show?” Thurman couldn’t seem to follow the conversation.

“Yes, by accident.”

“Wait – really?” This time, Avi was the one to stare at me in astonishment.
